Best-Selling American Cereals and Breakfasts in the UK

The amount of American food and drink you can now get hold of in the UK is growing by the day, not least in the area of breakfast cereals. Any British person who watches American TV shows, soaps, sitcoms and movies will know of at least one brand of American breakfast cereal. And now they can find out what it tastes like by buying it from online American food retailers that have appeared in recent years.

So what is available and what is popular? A quick Google search for "American breakfast cereals" will give you a list of online sellers that you can take a look at. Here's a list of what appear to be the most popular and best-selling American cereals in the UK at the moment.

1) Lucky Charms

One of the most famous cereals in the world, most people are aware of the tagline "They're after me Lucky Charms!", as the leprechaun (called, of course, Lucky) from the advert says. Lucky Charms are basically frosted oats and coloured marshmallows in the shape of hearts, moons, pots of gold and other things you would associate with a leprechaun. It's not as unhealthy as it sounds either, containing 12 vitamins and providing a good source of calcium.

2) Froot Loops

Another big name cereal, this time from the world famous Kellogg's. This multi-grain cereal is flavoured with multiple fruit flavourings and is advertised by Toucan Sam. It's a long standing cereal in the States and there's also a marshmallow version! You may already be aware of Froot Loops and have wanted to try them. Now you can.

3) Reeses Puffs

This one is probably an acquired taste. Why? Because it comes from Hershey, the makers of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and yes, it contains peanut butter! Actually it is a combination of corn puffs in Hershey's cocoa and Reeses' peanut butter flavour. A favourite with the Americans for sure, and becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Only the USA would consider having peanut butter with breakfast, but these are the same people that have it with jam on sandwiches!

4) Pop Tarts

Yes, you've been able to get Kellogg's Pop Tarts in the UK for quite a few years now, but they are nothing like the American version and they certainly don't come in the range of flavours available in the States. Just look at these - Cookies & Cream, Wild Grape, Strawberry Milkshake, Apple Strudel. The list is endless! Now that the American versions are available in the UK, you can try them all. The beauty of these is their convenience of course - just pop (hence the name) them in the toaster, wait a minute or two and they're done.

5) Pancakes

Ever fancied a proper breakfast of American pancakes with syrup? Well now you can have it. There are a range of authentic pancake mixes from a variety of manufacturers including Aunt Jemima, Bisquick and Mississippi Belle and each of them offer proper syrup to go with it.

Raw Food Diet Recipes Give Food Flavor

Does dieting have to be limited to starvation, pills, and powdered shakes?

We often become hesitant to go on a "diet" because we assume that we'll be hungry or cringe during every meal. The real problem is that we perceive weight loss the wrong way. Weight loss shouldn't be about simply losing weight. It should be about changing our eating habits-forever.

Sticking to a raw diet is easier than standard diets. That's because you can buy everything you need from your local supermarket, farmer's market, and so on. And, you'd probably be surprised at how many raw food diet recipes are available. This makes it easy to prepare healthy and flavorful meals for your family or when you have guests.

Dishes made from raw foods are busting with color, aromas, and most importantly, flavor! From juices to guacamole and from stuffed peppers to cranberry sauce, the sky is the limit when preparing raw food recipes.

You can even create tasty desserts, such as durian popsicles and rice pudding!

Where can you find raw food recipes? Several cookbooks are available in bookstores. Of course, you can also search where you can find virtually any information in the universe: the Internet. Remember, though, that some of the best raw food recipes can come from friends and relatives who share the same love for natural fare.

Finally, while a diet of raw foods is undoubtedly healthier than eating cooked food, the absence of meat in your diet could create certain nutrient deficiencies. Thus, it's wise to take supplements for Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D. You should also consider supplements for copper, iron, and zinc. Without these vitamins, you could experience problems related to energy loss, overworked organs, and even hair loss!

The bottom line is that raw foods can be colorful, aromatic, and scrumptious.

Moroccan Skirt Steak with Roasted Pepper Couscous Recipe

The Arabic Food Recipes kitchen (The Home of Delicious Arabic Food Recipes) invites you to try Moroccan Skirt Steak with Roasted Pepper Couscous Recipe. Enjoy the Moroccan Cuisine and  learn how to make Moroccan Skirt Steak with Roasted Pepper Couscous.

Thin cuts of beef, such as skirt steak or sirloin steak, cook very quickly when seared in a hot skillet—just right for a busy weeknight. We love how the spicy Moroccan flavors on the steak complement the sweet, roasted pepper-studded couscous. Serve with: Arugula salad and a glass of Pinot Noir.

4 servings
Active Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

2 medium bell peppers
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 whole lemon, plus more lemon wedges for garnish
1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2/3 cup whole-wheat couscous
1 pound skirt steak (see Note) or sirloin steak, 3/4 to 1 inch thick, trimmed
2 tablespoons chopped green olives

Preparation

Position rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler.
Place bell peppers on a baking sheet and roast under the broiler, turning every 5 minutes, until charred and softened, 10 to 15 minutes. Transfer to a clean cutting board; when cool enough to handle, chop the peppers into bite-size pieces.
Meanwhile, combine cumin, coriander, salt, turmeric, cinnamon and pepper in a small bowl. Grate 1/2 teaspoon zest from the lemon. Juice the lemon into a 1-cup measure and add enough water to make 1 cup. Pour into a small saucepan and add the lemon zest, 1 teaspoon of the spice mixture and 1 teaspoon olive oil. Bring to a boil. Stir in couscous, cover, remove from heat and let stand.
Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet (preferably cast-iron) over medium heat until shimmering (but not smoking). Rub the remaining spice mixture on both sides of steak. Cook the steak 2 to 3 minutes per side for medium-rare. Let rest on the cutting board for 5 minutes. Stir olives and the peppers into the couscous. Thinly slice the steak and serve with the couscous and lemon wedges, if desired.

Tips & Notes

Ingredient Note: Skirt steak is a thin, flavorful and relatively inexpensive cut of beef. It is sometimes referred to as fajita steak. Look for it in well-stocked supermarkets or ask your butcher to order it for you.

For the pea and potato mash-up

Preparation method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Rub the pork belly with the jerk seasoning and place in a heavy-based frying pan, fat-side down. Cook for a few minutes until golden-brown then quickly sear on all sides to seal. Remove the pan from the heat and leave to rest for about five minutes.
  2. Pour the cider into a large jug with the chicken stock. Place the onion rings in a roasting tin and scatter over the garlic and thyme. Lay the rested pork belly on top, skin-side up, and pour the cider mixture around the meat. Season to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover with tin foil and braise in the oven for 2½-3 hours, or until the pork is tender and completely soft.
  3. Remove the foil and turn the oven up to 230C/450F/Gas 8. Roast the meat for another 20-25 minutes until lightly crisp and golden-brown. Remove from the oven and set aside to rest.
  4. Meanwhile, place the potatoes in a large pan of salted water and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 12-15 minutes until tender then drain well. Tip the drained potatoes into a large bowl and gently crush each potato with the back of a fork until it just splits. Drizzle over the oil, season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper and mix carefully until all the oil has been absorbed.
  5. Meanwhile, cook the peas in a separate pan of boiling, salted water for 3-4 minutes until tender then drain well. Mix the peas through the crushed potatoes and season to taste with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Arrange the mash-up on plates with slices of the pork belly.
