1. When it's strawberry season, buy extra to freeze. Freeze them unwashed in zipper bags. They work great in winter time smoothies. Just take several out rinse and cut the top off and plop in the blender with a banana and orange juice.

2. Hate making bacon because of the splatter mess? Make it in the oven. Spray a cookie sheet and line up the bacon. Bake at 375 degrees until almost done. I drain on paper towels and store in the refrigerator in fresh paper towels. You can take out just what you need and microwave them in another paper towel until done.

3. Isn't slicing grapes or cherry tomatoes in half time consuming? Get 2 plastic carton container lids and put them in between the lids. You can then easily slice them in a few strokes between the lids.

4. Like to make pizzas on the grill in the summer? After you make the dough, roll it out into individual serving size pizza rounds. Then, grill lightly on one side. Stack them for guests to top as they wish. Make sure they put sauce and toppings on the grilled side. Put back on the grill to finish.

5. Like steel cut oats, but don't have 30 minutes to wait for it in the morning? Make the recipe with one cup of oats and put it in a container in the refrigerator. Scoop out only what you need each morning and microwave. Works great!

6. Have bananas that are getting too ripe, but no time to make banana bread? Peel them and put them in a plastic zipper bag, getting as much air out as possible, and freeze. They will be ready to go when you have the time to bake.

7. Love chocolate desserts? Visit the grocery or drug stores after a holiday and up seasonal chocolate really inexpensively for great desserts in the future.

8. Don't you love those grocery store rotisserie chickens? I cut the breast meat off the bone for my kids, and save the rest of the chicken in a gallon zipper bag in the freezer. You can put it in a stockpot with water, onion, carrot, celery, poultry season, bay leaf and a little salt and pepper for the start of great chicken noodle soup. There is already a lot of great seasoning that adds to the depth of flavor.

9. Have just a bit of steak, chicken or fish left from a meal? Save it and make a quesadilla appetizer tomorrow for everyone to munch on before dinner, or an after school snack.

10. Make too much icing for those sugar cookies? Put the leftovers into zipper bags and store in the freezer. When you need to decorate a few cookies or write on a cake, you'll have them ready made and in a variety of colors.

Tips on Keeping Food Fresh

The Arabic Food Recipes kitchen invites you to read this article about Tips on Keeping Food Fresh.

Following are some interesting tips on keeping food items fresh with different applications. Dry storage, refrigeration, pickling, brine, and more.
  • If you store half an apple in the container where you are storing a cake, the cake will retain it's freshness longer.
  • Cottage cheese will remain fresher longer if you store it upside down in the refrigerator. This slows the effects of oxidation.
  • To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water, if it sinks then it is fresh, if it floats to the surface, throw it away.
  • To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.
  • The best time to harvest fruits and vegetables for maximum flavor is in the morning.
  • Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks.
  • Place a slice of apple in hardened brown sugar to soften it.
  • What should you do with fruit with mold? Throw it away rather than simply cutting off the mold since mold on fruit goes much deeper than what appears on the fruit.
  • Mushrooms should never be soaked in water because they absorb liquid and will become mushy.
  • To keep mushrooms from discoloring, squeeze the juice of one quarter lemon onto a paper towel and wipe each cap with the dampened towel, this also helps clean the mushrooms.
Storing Potatoes
  • Store potatoes, loosely packed, in a cool dark place. Do not store in the refrigerator.
  • Avoid rinsing potatoes before storing.
  • Store in a cool, dark, dry place. A root cellar, if you have one, is the best storage option.
  • Make sure the temperature in the area is about 45 to 50 degrees F. Don't store potatoes in the refrigerator, or they will become too sweet.
  • Avoid storing potatoes with onions because, when close together, they produce gases that spoil both.
  • Store potatoes no longer than two months if mature. If they are new, store no longer than one week.
  • Check on them occasionally and remove those that have become soft or shriveled, as well as those that have sprouted.

Shedding light on Cellulite

In the recent years, ‘Cellulite’ has gained more popularity with increasing publicity in the media. And it is something that a majority of women complain about nowadays. But what exactly is it and how can it be avoided or reduced? Read on for answers to these questions.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the dimpling appearance of the skin which occurs mainly around the buttocks and thighs. These are also areas where women tend to store fat. Cellulite is not necessarily linked to how overweight a person is as it occurs in all women of all ages, race, weight and size. The main identifier of cellulite is the orange peel effect - the fat gets trapped under your skin and take’s away its smoothness, replacing it with dimpled skin similar to the peel of an orange. This is not a medical problem but more of a cosmetic one.

Good to know:

Did you know that cellulite affects 85 – 98% of women?!

Where does cellulite come from?

* Too many toxins in the body, for example from unhealthy eating habits and smoking
* Lack of muscle tone in that area due to a sedentary lifestyle
* Poor blood circulation to that area especially if you are physically inactive and overweight.

How can cellulite be reduced?

A priority in the beauty industry, they have tried to come up with many solutions to get rid of cellulite. Some of them include therapies that increase blood circulation to the area, i.e. when there is increased blood circulation it becomes easier to remove the trapped fats, toxins and water in that area. The normal treatments offered are massages and anti-cellulite creams.

BUT there is no miracle product!

All these beauty remedies will only make your skin look smoother but they do not guarantee a cure. And, they will not work unless you follow a healthy diet and perform regular routine of exercises that increases blood circulation, tones and tightens muscles, which in turn will decrease the appearance of cellulite.

The best solution: Prevention!

As they say “prevention is better than cure”, and to avoid cellulite you need to follow a healthy diet. Go for whole, unprocessed foods. Try to have fruits and vegetables with every meal. They are filled with vitamins and fibre that help eliminate toxins before they get stored in your body. Drink plenty of water which is essential to keep your body hydrated and also flushed from harmful substances.

Tips to being cellulite free!

* Have a fresh fruit daily as part of your breakfast, like an apple or an orange
* Have a large fresh salad with your lunch
* Snack on dried fruits when you feel like having a quick snack
* Have a side dish of raw, steamed, boiled or baked vegetables at dinner
* Avoid deep fried foods and foods high in sugar
* Avoid eating foods in large quantities, especially if you are not active for a few hours after that. The excess food will be stored as fat. And, in women it usually goes to the hips and thigh region
* Exercise everyday to keep your muscles toned. The more muscle you build in your body, the easier it will be to burn off fats
* Drink plenty of water. Have a glass every hour, especially as the days get hotter.

Does coffee do my skin any good?

How many times have you looked in the mirror, at least once in a while, if not everyday, and wished that your skin was healthier and more glowing!

Most of us know that one of the foremost ways to do that is by using good skin care products, which are nowadays enriched in antioxidants – healthy compounds that play a role in protecting your skin cells from damage and premature aging.

But what you may not have known is that these antioxidants are derived from foods we consume everyday!

What foods are antioxidant-rich?

Antioxidants are found abundantly in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. Dates, red grapes, cranberries, pomegranates, apples, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, and green tea are rich sources of antioxidants.

Additionally, as proven by research, coffee too has been shown to provide substantial antioxidant benefits!  In fact, 3-5 cups of coffee a day provide you with around 60% of your average daily antioxidant intake.

So what do antioxidants do?

Antioxidants in foods primarily consist of Vitamins A, C, E, selenium, lycopenes, flavanoids, and polyphenols. They are nature’s way of helping keep our bodies young, healthy, and protected. The more antioxidants you have protecting your cells, the healthier your cells and body will be.

And how do they help protect skin cells?

* By fighting free radicals: Antioxidants play an important role in fighting free radicals – harmful compounds that can damage our body cells, including our skin cells, consequently speeding up the aging process. The damaging effects of free radicals on our skin are further increased when we are exposed to pollution and UV rays. This is why antioxidants might have a beneficial role in protecting our body cells from these free radicals.

* By stimulating the antioxidant effect in the body: Polyphenols, the main type of antioxidants found in coffee, can play a role in reducing oxidation (cell damage) and increasing the effect of other antioxidants mainly Vitamin E. This in turn helps stimulate the overall antioxidant effect in our body and skin cells.

Here are some daily steps for a healthier looking skin:

* Eat lots of fruits and vegetables as part of your daily balanced diet. These are an excellent source of antioxidants and also provide your body with fibre, essential vitamins, and minerals.
* Drink plenty of water – at least 8 cups/day
* Cleanse (clean your skin daily from dust and pollutants)
* Moisturise (use your skin care products to keep your skin moisturised)
* Use SPF ( protect your skin against harmful UV rays)
* Adopt a healthy lifestyle (especially avoid smoking)
* And, of course, indulge in your favourite cup of coffee for extra antioxidants.

So the next time you sip on a soothing cup of coffee, you can relax knowing that its antioxidant properties could probably provide more than just an energising start to your day.

Do you lose Calcium when you drink coffee?

Do you drink coffee in the morning to jump start your day?

* Prepare your coffee with a full glass of milk which helps you meet your needs in calcium.
* Go for low-fat or zero-fat milk with your coffee to get the calcium but not the fat.
* Add sugar in moderation to enhance taste, but not too much (think calories).
* Make sure your diet is adequate in calcium by eating 3 dairy servings per day.
* Drink coffee in moderation, about 3 to 4 cups a day.

Coffee is drunk all over the world everyday, by both young and old. It acts as a stimulant to fight fatigue, enhance mood and performance. For most people, indulging in a cup of coffee is a ritual they can't live without.

It has been thought that drinking coffee may lead to decreased calcium absorption and increased calcium excretion, thereby increasing the risk of osteoporosis. However, recent evidence shows that coffee doesn't have any negative effect on bone health. And of course, having strong healthy bones relies on a diet rich in calcium.

Does coffee have an effect on calcium?

Caffeine does produce a small increase in calcium excretion and a very small decrease in calcium absorption. But the body compensates by decreasing calcium excretion 2 to 3 hours later, so the net effect on calcium is unchanged. Studies show that in moderation, drinking coffee has no effect on bone health. In order to ensure stronger and healthier bones, one should consume a diet adequate in calcium, providing 1000 mg/day for women 19-50 years.

Can we lose calcium if we drink coffee?

Each cup of coffee contains on average 60-120 mg of caffeine. Three hundred milligrams a day is the recommended intake of caffeine, roughly equivalent to 3-4 cups of soluble coffee.

Studies show that a cup of coffee causes a calcium loss of 2-4 mg, a negligible figure when compared to the amount of calcium in the diet (for example: 1 cup of milk has 300 mg, a 30 g slice of cheese has about 150-200 mg).

Can Coffee with milk help me get my calcium needs?

Adding milk to your coffee can indeed help you meet your calcium needs especially if you don’t like the taste of milk.

Milk is the best source of calcium; it has a very high calcium content: one cup contains about 300 mgs. The calcium in milk is easily absorbed. Additionally, milk contains vitamins A, D, B12, which are essential for bone health.

In a recent survey, when people were asked to list their dietary sources of calcium only 6% listed their morning latte as a calcium source. What is good to know is that adding a glass of milk to your morning coffee will help you get up to 300 mg of calcium that you did not think of in the first place.

So next time you indulge in a cup of coffee remember:

With this healthy combination you will get your morning boost plus an extra source of calcium you enjoy.

So go ahead have that latte........ With a double shot of MILK.

Antioxidants in Coffee can help protect your heart!

The latest scientific findings…

Coffee provides more than just a morning kick start! A hot cup of coffee contributes to our antioxidant intake which is proven to protect against many diseases, one of them being heart disease.

This is still new and is an exciting lead for further study.

Coffee provides Antioxidants:

Coffee beans are one of the richest dietary sources of antioxidants and supplies as much as 70% of the total antioxidant intake of our diet making it the most important dietary source.

We get more antioxidants from coffee than any other dietary source as it is part of our daily routine. Consuming up to 4 cups of coffee a day will provide you with more antioxidants when compared to other dietary food sources such as tea, fruits and vegetables.

How do Antioxidants protect against heart disease?

External and internal factors in our life can cause cell damage and increase the risk of many diseases. Part of this cellular damage leads to one of the major known factors in the development of heart disease - oxidation of cholesterol. Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to low-density lipoproteins (LDL or “bad” cholesterol), which contributes to the build up of fatty substances on artery walls (atherosclerosis) and can eventually slow or block blood flow to the heart.

Antioxidants such as vitamin C and E, Selenium, phytochemicals and compounds like those found in Coffee may slow down oxidation and reduce the damage caused by cholesterol, thereby protecting our blood vessels & heart health.

Does coffee increase Blood Pressure?

Research has shown no relationship between a person’s intake of coffee and the risk of hypertension in normal people. Coffee may increase Blood Pressure only for people who are predisposed to it, i.e. who have a history of high blood pressure. Although there have been previous studies there is still no clear answer about the association between coffee consumption and hypertension.

Remember to care for your heart and overall health by:

* Exercising regularly
* Eating regular meals and snacks
* Following a balanced diet low in total fat and saturated fat
* Consuming high-fibre food sources like whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits
* Choosing more antioxidant rich foods such as colored fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and coffee in moderate amounts (3 to 4 cups per day)
* Maintaining your weight or trying to reduce your weight if you are overweight

Big news about Coffee: full of antioxidants!

Did you know that coffee is good for you? New findings have shown that coffee is a rich source of antioxidants that contribute significantly to your daily total antioxidant intake.

What are Antioxidants and what role do they play in your bodies?

Every day your body is exposed to harmful external and internal factors that can cause cell damage and increase the risk of many diseases. UV light, smoking, air pollution, radiation and tissue inflammation can affect the integrity of your cells and your health in general.

* Your body naturally fights off harmful substancesThankfully, your body, through natural metabolic processes is equipped to fight against this harmful attack. In addition to this, your body can also fight off these substances by the foods that you eat and drink!

* Antioxidants in food can help protect your body cellsAntioxidants are health compounds that are found in some foods and beverages and they play a vital role in protecting your cells from oxidation and your body from diseases such as heart disease, cancer, cataract, reduced immunity and premature aging.

Where are antioxidants found?

Antioxidants (like vitamin A, E, C, & Beta Carotene) are found in various food sources, especially coloured fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds.

The most commonly known antioxidants are vitamins & minerals but there are other compounds available in foods and drinks that are effective antioxidants and these are available in coffee!

Did you know that coffee can provide you with even more antioxidants than other food sources?

The Antioxidants in coffee are:

* Chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant that is found abundantly in coffee

* Melanoidins are compounds found in coffee that contribute to its strong antioxidant properties, which are also responsible for its aroma when roasting.

Studies on the above substances have shown the importance of these antioxidant properties and how they can protect you from aging and diseases.

Antioxidant activity is greatly affected by the coffee’s method of preparation. When coffee is roasted, it contains a larger amount of antioxidants compared to non-roasted coffee, and thus gives you more health benefits.

How many cups of coffee per day to get your antioxidants?

As proven by research, coffee too has been shown to provide substantial antioxidant benefits!  In fact, 3-5 cups of coffee a day provide you with around 60% of your average daily antioxidant intake. As coffee is also a source of caffeine, a natural stimulant, it is recommended to consume coffee in moderation – an average of 3-4 cups per day.

Whether you opt for normal or decaffeinated coffee or choose to top it off with milk or creamer, you will still benefit from coffee’s antioxidant content!

Coffee for better physical performance

* For better physical performance, the recommended intake of caffeine before exercise is 1-2mg/kg of body weight (e.g. a 70 kg adult should take around 140mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to 2 cups of coffee before a workout).

* An amount up to 300mg of caffeine, which is equivalent to 3 to 4 cups of soluble coffee per day, will not alter body fluid levels.

* Remember that the effect of caffeine lasts up to 3 hours, so make sure to take it an hour to an hour and a half before working out.

In today’s daily rush, people are working harder to be more successful yet, they still wonder if they are doing the right thing for their health. If you ask almost everyone around you about the benefits of a good diet and regular exercise, you will find a consensus that they are both a crucial part of a healthy life. So, what is preventing people from exercising regularly? If you ask yourself, the answer most of the time is “there is no energy after a long day at work”. This article discusses the importance of coffee in providing energy for better physical performance.

Coffee, Exercise and Performance

Exercise should be part of your life whether it is in doing the daily chores, playing with the kids, trying to lose weight or if you are an athlete trying to win a competition. In either case, you need a moderate boost to improve your exercise performance, be it simply to burn more calories, be more active or win a gold medal.

How can coffee be a good pre-exercise beverage?

It is now a well-known fact that coffee contains caffeine, a naturally occurring stimulant found in leaves, nuts and seeds of different plants. A cup of coffee contains around 75mg of caffeine. The mechanism through which coffee enhances performance is not fully established yet but all research has shown that as little as 90 mg of caffeine from coffee can enhance the performance of athletes involved in endurance exercise, short and long duration as well as high intensity exercise. In some cases, the performance was improved by 12.4%!

Good to know

Moderate doses of caffeine, an equivalence of about 2 cups of coffee, reduce by half the post-workout muscle pain.

Does the caffeine in coffee lead to dehydration during exercise?

Many people worry that due to the diuretic (increase in water excretion from the body) effect of caffeine, they will be at risk of dehydration during exercise. In fact, recent studies have proven that with a healthy diet and an adequate daily water intake, the diuretic effect of caffeine remains insignificant and very mild where it was found that:

Remember: The best way of remaining hydrated during exercise is to drink water and when the workout surpasses 1-2 hours, an isotonic drink that contains sodium, potassium and some sugar would be ideal to aid in restoring blood sugar and the lost electrolytes.

Getting into stride with coffee: If you don’t drink coffee and you wish to start now, make sure you start gradually. Take half a cup in the morning for a couple of days and then you can increase to one cup daily for a week. Eventually you will build up a tolerance and you can start taking it in the afternoon as well and before working out.

Good to know: Not only does coffee enhance physical performance and give you more energy to workout, it also decreases the feeling of fatigue during the last minutes of your workout.Research has shown that coffee intake also increases mental alertness, which in turn enhances your physical abilities.  Experts always say that winning is all in your head!

Pomegranates: The sweet way to help protect your heart

Juicy, seedy and absolutely delicious, pomegranates are one of the most popular fruits possessing a wealth of health benefits. It has a long history, having been first grown in Asia and over time in California, US and Mediterranean countries.

Besides being sweet, succulent fruit, pomegranates have many healthy properties:

They are full of antioxidants! Pomegranates contain polyphenols, tannins and anthocyanins – all beneficial antioxidants. When it’s squeezed into a refreshing juice, it normally contains high levels of antioxidants – higher than most other fruit juices like orange and grape, and even green tea! The beneficial compounds in this fruit, as well as its vitamins A and C content may help protect the body from breast and lung cancer, heart disease, premature aging, and Alzheimer's disease.

They help prevent heart disease: Studies demonstrating the beneficial effect of pomegranates on cardiovascular health suggest that pomegranates can help reduce “bad” cholesterol levels while having a beneficial effect on “good” cholesterol levels. Recent research has also suggested that drinking about 50ml of pomegranate juice per day lowers systolic blood pressure by as much as five percent.

Additionally, new investigations indicate that:Drinking a small cup (180 ml) of pomegranate juice per day for three months may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, a condition that leads to thickening of arteries. Pomegranates also help prevent plaque from building up in the arteries.

Pomegranates… low in calories and packed with nutrition: Did you know that 1 medium Pomegranate contains only 100 calories? As surprising as it is, it fits perfectly into a diet plan as it offers a wealth of healthy antioxidants, in addition to being low in calories. And it can also help you feel full because of its fibre content (when eaten as a whole fruit). Pomegranates are also a good source of potassium, which helps lower Blood Pressure, and Vitamin C which plays an important role in fighting infections and boosting your immune system.

The seeds have a higher nutritional value! In contrast to the juice, Pomegranate seeds are rich in fibre and therefore healthier for your digestive system. You can enjoy it plain, sprinkled on salads or an appetizer (like mutabbal), or with your fruit salad. And as with any other fruit, the sooner you eat or drink it after peeling or squeezing, the more vitamins and antioxidants you will ingest. This is because oxygen, light and time affect the amount of nutrients it contains.

Good to know: Pomegranates can stain your clothes, so be sure to wear an apron or clothing when peeling it!

How to chose your Pomegranates and store them properly?

Select fruit heavy and brightly coloured with blemish-free skin. The best part is that you can refrigerate whole pomegranates for up to two months! For added convenience, you can pack pomegranate seeds in an airtight container and store them in the freezer for up to three months.

4 scallions, trimmed and sliced
1 egg
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 6-1/2-inch whole-wheat pitas, halved and warmed, if desired
Tahini sauce
1/2 cup low-fat plain yogurt
2 tablespoons tahini (see Ingredient note)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/3 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

1. To prepare burgers: Place chickpeas, scallions, egg, flour, oregano, cumin and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a food processor. Pulse, stopping once or twice to scrape down the sides, until a coarse mixture forms that holds together when pressed. (The mixture will be moist.) Form into 4 patties.

Middle Eastern Lamb Stew

The Arabic Food Recipes kitchen (The Home of Delicious Arabic Food Recipes) invites you to try Middle Eastern Lamb Stew Recipe. Enjoy the Middle Eastern Cuisine and learn how to make tasty Middle Eastern Lamb Stew.

This brothy stew is boldly flavored with a blend of characteristic Middle Eastern spices and finished with fresh spinach and fiber-rich chickpeas. Economical lamb shoulder tenderizes beautifully when leisurely cooked in a slow cooker. If you can’t find boneless shoulder stew meat, do not substitute more-expensive lamb leg—it tends to dry out during slow cooking. Instead, purchase lamb shoulder chops and debone them. Serve over bulgur and accompany with a salad.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds boneless lamb stew meat (shoulder cut) or 2 1/2 pounds lamb shoulder chops, deboned, trimmed and cut into 1-inch chunks
1 tablespoon olive oil or canola oil
4 teaspoons ground cumin
1 tablespoon ground coriander
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
1 large or 2 medium onions, chopped
1 28-ounce can diced tomatoes
3/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 15- or 19-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed
6 ounces baby spinach

Directions

1. Place lamb in a 4-quart or larger slow cooker. Mix oil, cumin, coriander, cayenne, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Coat the lamb with the spice paste and toss to coat well. Top
with onion.

2. Bring tomatoes, broth and garlic to a simmer in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Pour over the lamb and onion. Cover and cook until the lamb is very tender, 3 to 3 1/2 hours on high or 5 1/2 to 6 hours on low.

3. Skim or blot any visible fat from the surface of the stew. Mash 1/2 cup chickpeas with a fork in a small bowl. Stir the mashed and whole chickpeas into the stew, along with spinach. Cover and cook on high until the spinach is wilted, about 5 minutes.

Middle Eastern Salad Plate

The Arabic Food Recipes kitchen (The Home of Delicious Arabic Food Recipes) invites you to try Middle Eastern Salad Plate Recipe. Enjoy cooking tasty Middle Eastern food and learn how to make Middle Eastern Salad Plate.

The flavors of sunny Greece make this a lovely salad to serve as a first course at summer dinner parties, or as a light lunch. A garden-fresh mix of ripe tomatoes and cucumbers is enlivened with parsley and a simple vinaigrette. Alongside is a creamy traditional hummus dip, made with chickpeas, tahini, garlic and lemon. Toasted pita bread finishes the dish. Spread the pita bread with some hummus, and pile on the salad, for a deliciously fresh sandwich, if you like.

Ingredients

2 medium cucumbers
2 medium tomatoes
1/4 cup snipped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon coarse black pepper
1 15- or 16-ounce can chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
1/2 cup tahini (see note below)
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 large pita bread rounds
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper

Directions

1. For salad, peel cucumbers, if desired. Chop cucumbers and tomatoes; toss together with parsley, vinegar, 1 tablespoon of the olive oil, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and black pepper. Cover and chill.

2. Wrap pita rounds in foil and heat in a 350 degree F oven for 30 minutes or until warm.

3. Meanwhile, to make hummus, drain chickpeas, reserving liquid. In food processor bowl combine chickpeas, tahini, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of remaining olive oil, lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; cover and process until smooth, adding enough chickpea liquid until hummus is same consistency as thick oatmeal.

4. Cut warm pita rounds into wedges. Spoon hummus onto plates, drizzle with remaining olive oil, and sprinkle with red pepper. Serve with cucumber and tomato salad. Makes 6 side-dish servings.

5. Note: Tahini, a puree of sesame seeds, can be found in large supermarkets, Middle Eastern markets, or other specialty food stores.

The master bathroom has floor-to-ceiling windows, two glass-enclosed showers, remote control toilet/bidet with a heated seat ...

No 7. The Fairmont Hotel

Penthouse Suite
$10,000 per night

The 6,000-square-foot Penthouse Suite at the Fairmont Hotel on San Francisco's Nob Hill takes up the entire eighth floor of the hotel and has three bedrooms, a dining room that holds 50 people, an eat-in kitchen and a two-story, domed library with a ceiling painted with the constellations.
There is also a billiards room covered floor-to-ceiling in Persian tiles, and four fireplaces inlaid with lapis lazuli. The bathroom fixtures are made of 24 karat gold, and a secret passageway is concealed behind the bookshelves on the library's second floor.

No 6. Hotel Cala di Volpe

Presidential Suite
$13,879 per night

The Costa Smeralda ("Emerald Coast"), on the eastern coast of Sardinia, became famous during the 1960s when the Aga Khan bought it and convinced his jet-set friends to start building villas and a yacht club on the beautiful but previously undeveloped island. The coast also served as the backdrop to the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me.

The split-level Presidential Suite has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and two sitting rooms. The highlight is the private, outdoor saltwater pool on the second floor. The style is rustic but luxurious, with whitewashed walls, exposed beams, thick down cushions and wooden accents. The bed frames are wrought iron, and the tiles are hand-painted ceramic. The suite also has its own gazebo and solarium, as well as a DVD library and Bang & Olufsen stereos.

No 5. Westin Excelsior

Villa La Cupola
$14,950 per night

Rome's "Villa La Cupola" suite within the Westin Excelsior has all things Roman and excessive - a cupola, a Pompeii-style Jacuzzi pool, frescoes and stained glass windows. Located on the fifth and sixth floor underneath the cupola of the hotel (which was made famous by Fellini's movies), the suite covers 6,099 square feet and has an additional 1,808 square feet of balconies and terraces. While it only has two bedrooms, five more can be joined to it.

The stained glass windows in the living room detail allegories of a mythological figure paired with a modern one, such as Atlas and Television, Hypnosis and Neurosis, Hermes and Marketing, and Hermaphrodite and Fashion. The downstairs also has a private kitchen, and the dining room features an antique Murano glass chandelier, a private wine cabinet and an antique mosaic-tile-covered dining room.

What really makes this suite over the top is a private cinema with Dolby surround sound. Such luxury makes even the private elevator that leads up to the fitness area and Jacuzzi - complete with mosaic floors, vaulted ceilings and frescoes - seem ordinary. The painted horizons on the frescoes were designed to match perfectly with the real Roman one.

No 4. The Plaza Hotel

Presidential Suite
$15,000 per night

The 7,802-square-foot suite covers nearly the entire 18th floor of the Plaza, with views overlooking Central Park. The walls are covered in silk, the reception area has a 10-foot-wide stained glass window and the hand-painted piano depicts scenes from the French countryside.

The suite has five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms, two living rooms, a dining room, powder room and sauna. There are also three marble fireplaces, a terrace and a 2,000-bottle wine cellar (guests are charged extra for indulging). The Presidential Suite also comes with the use of a secretary/butler and the Plaza's chefs are at your disposal.

No 3. The Martinez Hotel

Presidential Suite
$18,500 per night

The Martinez Hotel in Cannes likes superlatives and bills itself as having the biggest, most expensive and only terraced penthouse suite on the Cote d'Azur. Perhaps some of this is Gallic swagger, but the price of the suites certainly makes them one of the most expensive in Europe. Both penthouse suites are 8,000 square feet and are decorated in the hotel's signature Art Deco style, with streamlined furniture, silk curtains and teak parquet floors.

While many of the hotel's rooms are painted in bright colors (peach, lime green), the penthouse suites are decorated in muted, understated tones (brown, cream and tan). Each suite has two bedrooms, a Turkish bath, kitchen, personal sauna and views of the Lerins Islands as well as the entire Bay of Cannes. The wraparound terrace is 2,000 square feet and can comfortably hold 100 people. It also has a Jacuzzi. Technophiles will appreciate the Bose plasma screen televisions and telephones and the DVD library. A private butler is on call 24 hours a day, and other amenities include use of a limousine, open bar and the option to join both suites into one grand apartment.

No 2. President Wilson Hotel

The Imperial Suite
$23,300 per night

At the sleek, modern President Wilson Hotel in Geneva, security takes as much precedence as luxury. Faster than you can say "Frette linens," the hotel's staff reassures guests that the security in the Imperial Suite is among the best in the world, ideal for celebrities or traveling heads of states who visit the United Nations headquarters next door at the Palais Wilson.

The Imperial Suite, which takes up the entire top floor of the hotel, is reached via a private elevator and has four bedrooms, all of which overlook Lake Geneva. The suite is decorated in a contemporary style, with marble and hardwood floors, and the bay windows overlook Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. Off of the master bedroom is a dressing room as well as a study, and the suite has five bathrooms, all with mosaic marble floor, and a Jacuzzi and steam bath in the main bath. The living room has a billiards table, a library and a cocktail lounge with a view of the water fountain, and can accommodate 40 people. The dining room seats 26 people around an oval mahogany table. For the security-conscious or merely the paranoid, the Imperial Suite is also equipped with bulletproof windows and doors.

No 1. The Atlantis

Atlantis Bridge Suite
$25,000 per night

The Atlantis Bridge Suite has the distinction of being the most expensive hotel suite in the world - a whopping $25,000 a night. Found on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Bridge Suite is located on top of a bridge that connects the two Royal Towers buildings, so it overlooks the entire resort and marina.

The ten-room suite is decorated in red, black and gold (lots of gold) and comes with its own butler, bar lounge and entertainment center as well as 12-foot ceilings. The master bedroom has a sitting area, his-and-hers closets, and hand-painted linens. The bathrooms have chaise lounges, marble baths, and dolphin fixtures. For those who are picky about their personal space, there are two separate master bathrooms. The kitchen also has its own entrance so the butler or cook never bothers you.
So, do you feel like spending $25,000 for one night?

The Most Expensive Thanksgiving Dinner

The Arabic Rood Recipes Kitchen presents The Most Expensive Thanksgiving Dinner!!!

The cost of the average Thanksgiving dinner is around $45. That’s for ten people, and it includes dessert. But that $45 wouldn’t have gotten you very far at Cafe Gray’s infamous Thanksgiving dinner in 2006. Dinner for 12 at their chef’s table was prix fixe at $10,000. That’s about $833 a head, compared to the average American’s $4.50 a head.

To call this legendary event a “dinner”, however, is somewhat misleading. Thanksgiving Day at Gray’s began with a breakfast of cornflake-crusted french toast, scrambled eggs, brioche, bacon, and a viewing of the famous Macy’s Day Parade on giant plasma screens. I think it’s a little bizarre to watch the parade on TV when you’re actually in New York City and can just step outside and see the whole thing firsthand, but I guess you get a lot more elbow room kicking back at the chef’s table.

Around noon, Chef Gray did a personal turkey-carving demonstration, and then the brasserie bar opened to serve hors d’oeuvres to football fans, who watched NFL games on the bespoke plasma screen TVs. Dinner began with a salad of fennel and blood oranges, drizzled in a poppy seed vinaigrette. Next came truffled butternut potage and lobster and crabmeat gratin, followed by an organic lemon-thyme roasted turkey. Finally, for dessert there was pumpkin custard, key lime pie, and something called “million dollar pie”. I’m not sure what’s in “million dollar pie”, but the name seems a fitting end to a meal that costed over eight bills a head.

The World's Most Expensive Pizza

The Arabic Rood Recipes Kitchen presents to you the World's Most  Expensive Pizza.

Pizza is one of the staples of the modern American diet, especially amongst the young and the lower class. It’s generally regarded as a cheap and convenient meal with more going for it than its fast food competition. So when we heard about chef Domenico Crolla’s “Pizza Royale 007″, we were quite shocked. It didn’t seem likely that someone would have set out to make the world’s most expensive pizza when usually pizza is such a low budget meal.

The 12 inch pizza pie is densely packed with an assortment of some of the world’s most expensive food ingredients, such as lobster marinated in cognac, caviar soaked in champagne, sunblush tomato sauce, Scottish smoked salmon, venison medallions, prosciutto, and vintage balsamic vinegar. In addition to all these fine ingredients, it’s topped with a significant amount of edible 24-carat gold flakes.

Mr. Crolla originally claimed that the novelty luxury pizza was worth some $3,700, and he would auction it on eBay and donate the proceeds to The Fred Hollows Foundation. The Fred Hollows Foundation is a UK organization that seeks to eradicate avoidable blindness in developing countries. The auction ended November 19, 2006 with the highest bid by Italian lawyer Maurizio Morelli reaching £2,150 (approx. $4,200 in US dollars). Morelli is a charitable food connoisseur from Rome who also collects fine wines and truffles. The Guinness Book of World Records is reviewing the details of the pizza’s sale and it is under consideration for taking the record for “World’s Most Expensive Pizza” from a less extravagant white truffle pizza created by Gordon Ramsay’s Maze restaurant in London.

Most Expensive Bread

Harrods, London’s premier department store, now carries a most luxurious loaf. Britain’s most expensive bread and, if you believe some of the hype surrounding it, the most expensive bread in the world, the Roquefort and Almond sourdough is created with some of the finest ingredients money can buy.

Master baker Paul Hollywood, creator of the bread, calls it the “Rolls-Royce of loafs.” The bread, which contains no additives and no artificial flavors, is made with grade A flour from a specialist miller and France’s finest Roquefort cheese.

The bread, recognized as Britain’s most expensive by the National Association of Master Bakers, will be sold at Harrods for £15 (US $24.50). They expect the bread will do particularly well during the holiday season.

World’s Most Expensive Baked Potato

The baked potato may not be the most healthful item on your plate but, thanks to chef Ben Kingdon of The Cary Arms, it could be the priciest.

The Cary Arms is “The Inn on the Beach” in the coastal town of Torquay in Devon county, England. It’s there that Kingdon produces the gastropub food for which the inn is known—including the most expensive baked potato in the world.

The 24-year-old chef refers to this delicacy as the “tuxedo spud,” as a baked potato is known in Great Britain as a “jacket potato.” The potato’s flesh has been mixed with creme fraiche, lemon, chives and spring onions, and topped with caviar. Sides include balsamic-roasted vine tomatoes and a side salad, served with the potato on a wooden board. The dish is served with a glass of champagne.

The expensive potato is priced at £40—US $60. Unfortunately, only one was ordered in the two weeks after its debut.
